What is "Hari"?

Hari is one of Okinawa's representative annual events, dragon boat rowing races and related festivities held at fishing ports and other locations throughout the prefecture. Hari races are held to pray for a safe voyage at sea and a good catch fishing.
We invite you to experience an official dragon boat equipped with a dragon's head and tail in Tomigusuku City, the birthplace of Hari.

The birthplace of "Hari,"

About 600 years ago, Wan Ooso, the lord of Tomigusuku, was studying in China and was impressed by the dragon boat races that were conducted as a rainmaking ritual. After returning to the Ryukyu Kingdom, he made a boat imitating the Chinese dragon boats, and floated it on Lake Man in Tomigusuku City, which is said to be where "Hari" originated.
