What is "Hari"?

Hari is one of Okinawa's representative annual events, dragon boat rowing races and related festivities held at fishing ports and other locations throughout the prefecture. Hari races are held to pray for a safe voyage at sea and a good catch fishing.
We invite you to experience an official dragon boat equipped with a dragon's head and tail in Tomigusuku City, the birthplace of Hari.
-
The birthplace of "Hari,"
About 600 years ago, Wan Ooso, the lord of Tomigusuku, was studying in China and was impressed by the dragon boat races that were conducted as a rainmaking ritual. After returning to the Ryukyu Kingdom, he made a boat imitating the Chinese dragon boats, and floated it on Lake Man in Tomigusuku City, which is said to be where "Hari" originated.

Experience boarding a Hari boat!
-
- 1Warm-up exercises
-
To row a hari boat, not only do you use your hands and arms but also your lower body. Make sure to stretch your entire body before boarding.
-
- 2Practicing on land
-
The paddle for rowing is called "Eku" for hari boats.
The person sitting in the left row grips the top of the "eku" with his right hand and the middle of the "eku" with his left hand, controlling the "eku" with the left side of his body.
The opposite is true for those sitting in the right row. The left hand grips the top of the "eku", the right hand grips the middle, and the right side of the body controls the "eku".
When rowing, place the "eku" at a 90-degree angle in the water and pull the "eku" back, holding it at the middle (with the left hand for those in the left row and with the right hand for those in the right row).
At this time, the key is to move the "eku" in accordance with the timing and movement of the person in front of you so that it does not collide with the person in front of you.
-
- 3Boarding
-
Please watch your step and keep a slightly lower posture when boarding, rather than standing upright, so that both the boat and your body will be stable.
When sitting, please sit as close as possible to both sides of the boat (the left side for those in the left row and the right side for those in the right row).
-
- 4Departure
-
As practiced on land, the hari boat will move forward by rowing the "eku" (paddle) in accordance with the movement of the person in front.
Feet are placed on the footrests under both ends to ensure that they are firmly planted while rowing.
At the front of the boat sits a "kaneuchi" (gong player), who beats a gong and taiko drums to keep the rhythm for everyone to move in unison. Pay attention to the movements of the person in front of you, and row with your "eku" in the water to the sound of the gong and drums.
Please be assured that the person in the back, the "kajitori" (helmsman), will be in control of changing the boat's direction.
-
- 5Break
-
Over time, your arms may start to ache, and it will be challenging to keep your position. Do not force yourself to paddle continuously; take moderate breaks and keep hydrated.
-
- 6Boat race
-
Once you get used to rowing, partake in rowing races, the most exciting part of Hari riding! Let's compete to see which boat gets first place.
※Depending on the number of participants, the course of embarkation, and weather conditions, there may be no rowing races.
Take home a one-of-a-kind memory!
